Winchester College: Campus Conservation and Development Framework

Balancing development aspirations with historic and environmental objectives

Adams Hendry prepared a Campus Conservation and Development Framework for Winchester College using a team of specialists to prepare a forward looking plan for the College’s historic Campus. The Framework is intended to provide flexible but comprehensive guidance to meet the College’s needs over the next 10 to 15 years extending over the 60ha Campus. It will enable the College to plan ahead with confidence, allowing it to meet the educational challenges of the future alongside the stewardship of a fine and valued historic and natural environment.

The Framework summarises issues and identifies opportunities for development, suggests areas to enhance the environment of the Campus including areas that are publicly accessible, and highlights potential development sites. An extensive public consultation exercise, presentations to local authority members and meetings with key stakeholders allowed a robust and rigorous analysis of the Framework, which has culminated in a general endorsement of the document, by Winchester City Council.

Individual sites are now being brought forward for development and Adams Hendry gained planning permission and listed building consent during 2011 for extensions and improvements to a major concert hall within the College campus.
