Originally due to be supplemented by a fully enclosed lamella primary treatment system as part of the Beckton STW Extension project, once permission had been granted work began to establish if the adoption of comprehensive odour management systems across the existing and extended STW could remove the need for additional primary treatment plant.
Following careful design referencing and screening of environmental effects, Adams Hendry were able demonstrate to the satisfaction of the local planning authorities that proposals to cover all 32 of existing the ~1750m2 primary settlement tanks and extract and treat odourous air via an odour control unit were permitted development in their own right.
The covers and treatment system were subsequently implemented between 2011 and 2015 and continue play a major role in the successful operation of the UK’s largest STW.
