Lee Tunnel

Provision of major stormwater capture and alleviation infrastructure

Adams Hendry were responsible for securing planning permission for the development of Thames Water’s 6.9km long 8.7m internal diameter sewage storage and transfer tunnel between Abbey Mills Pumping Station and Beckton Sewage Treatment Works (STW).

Since then, Adams Hendry have continued to work with the Lee Tunnel project team and have used their extensive project management and planning consents knowledge and experience to successfully discharge planning conditions and secure approval for scheme amendments as the construction of London’s deepest tunnel progresses to completion.

Once operational the Lee Tunnel will improve water quality in the River Thames and its Tideway by intercepting the combined sewer discharges at Abbey Mills Pumping Station, and by storing and transferring flows in the Lee Tunnel to Beckton STW where they will be treated.

HRH The Prince of Wales recently visited Lee Tunnel to mark the 150 year anniversary of London’s sewers which were designed by engineer Joseph Bazalgette.
