Adams Hendry working with 4Delivery and Southern Water successfully secured planning permission for the redevelopment and complete modernisation of Woolston Wastewater Treatment Works, on behalf of Southern Water Services Limited. The scheme involves a bespoke and architecturally led solution for an ageing and very constrained urban wastewater treatment works site. Lying adjacent to an established residential area, a large sub-regionally significant regeneration site and areas designated of national and international importance for nature conservation, the design was subject to widespread consultation with key stakeholders and the local community at the pre application stage.
The scheme represented significant challenges, not least as the existing sewage works has to remain operational throughout. Subsequent discussions with landowners of the Woolston Riverside regeneration area agreed a temporary partial treatment works on adjoining land to speed up the construction process whilst also enabling the regeneration of the area to proceed.
The Woolston Upgrade scheme will significantly reduce odour through the installation of the latest technology and by containing treatment processes within buildings, to a level where local residents and businesses will experience real and long lasting improvements in amenity.
Construction commenced in September 2014 and is expected to be completed within four years.
