| Stratford Station Upgrade | West Ham Station Temporary Capacity Enhancement Scheme | |||||||||||||||||||||||
Stratford Station was upgraded, with funding contributions from the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA), to allow around 60,000 spectators to pass through the station each morning during the Games and help the station cater for increased passenger demand in the future. The upgrade will create legacy benefits by providing additional rail capacity to support regeneration in the Lea valley. Transport for London progressed the enhancement scheme for the ODA initially and engaged Adams Hendry to prepare the planning application that was needed for those works that did not constitute permitted development. The planning application was for an additional westbound Central Line platform and a new station entrance at mezzanine level that provides a new access into the station from the Town Centre Link Bridge that is proposed by Westfield as part of the Stratford City Development. Construction was completed in June 2011 providing additional capacity at Stratford station well in advance of the Games in 2012. The adjoining Town Centre Link Bridge opened as part of Westfield’s Stratford City Development on 13th September 2011. |
Some 15% of spectators will access the Olympic Park from West Ham station by walking along an improved section of The Greenway, a public walking and cycling route. Adams Hendry acted as agent for the ODA to secure planning permission for a new temporary route directly from the District and Hammersmith & City Line platform, which the majority of spectators arriving at West Ham will use, to the Greenway. This will allow regular commuters to follow their usual route through the station without disruption. The planning permission also provides for permanent improvements to the local area, such as installing a new staircase and improving the access ramp from Manor Road to the Greenway. Construction works are underway with completion programmed for 2011. |
