The Pilgrims’ School, Winchester

Sensitive development solutions to enable development and change

As part of the Cathedral Close Plan for Winchester Cathedral, Adams Hendry laid the groundwork for the submission of a planning application and scheduled monument consent application by the school’s architects for a new two storey extension to the Pilgrims’ School, a boys’ preparatory school. This has now been completed and houses a new pre-prep nursery school and a replacement swimming pool with changing room.

Key issues considered as part of the work included overcoming strict national and local planning policies concerned with proposals adjoining scheduled monuments; the School’s character and setting within the Winchester conservation area; the location of the development adjacent to listed buildings including some which are Grade I listed and the setting of these listed buildings; high archaeological potential and flood risk.
