London Thames Gateway Development Corporation on 30 October 2009 granted planning permission for a new sewage sludge digestion facility at Riverside Sewage Treatment Works in Rainham. Adams Hendry provided Thames Water Utilities Ltd with planning consultancy services on the project.

The scheme involves the introduction of a new state of the art sludge digestion technology, thermal hydrolysis. Biogas from the digestion process will be used to generate renewable energy in a new Combined Heat and Power Plant on the site.

Being within London, the proposal involved consideration by three planning authorities: the London Borough of Havering, London Thames Gateway Development Corporation and the Greater London Authority.
