Adams Hendry provided the town planning and stakeholder engagement work on the project, working closely with Atkins Water & Environment Team and Southern Water in securing the necessary consents to deliver this major water resource scheme within an environmentally sensitive environment within the South Downs National Park.
Following work on a multi-phase options appraisal process, with full stakeholder engagement, Adams Hendry prepared the planning application for the preferred scheme, a new 10 Million litres per day (10Ml/d) abstraction from the River Arun, and a 75 Million litre (Ml) storage reservoir.
Extensive pre-application consultation and engagement with environmental regulators, consultees and the local community was undertaken to seek to incorporate their views and concerns into the design of the scheme, and to mitigate potential impacts. This work was highlighted by elected Councillors as having been of a very high quality, resulting in few adverse comments being expressed on the application. Planning consent was secured for this major new scheme without recourse to an Inquiry. The scheme has now been built and is operational.
