British Waterways commissioned Adams Hendry in 2006 to undertake an independent assessment of boatyards on the London Region canals and river navigations. We assessed the facilities available at each boatyard in particular the methods used to lift boats from the water for inspection and repair. We also recorded the availability of covered workspace and the range of services that could be provided at each boatyard. We recorded the planning context of each site in relation to planning policy and neighbouring land uses.

Our report recommended that fourteen boatyards should be protected by local planning authorities and also through the estate management of British Waterways and other owners of boatyard sites. British Waterways accepted our recommendations and published our report for use by local planning authorities and other interested parties.
