The Greater London Authority (GLA) commissioned Adams Hendry to investigate the current status and operation of boatyards serving the River Thames vessels in London in 2006. The starting point of the study was to identify changes in boatyard facilities since 1999 using a study that we undertook for the Port of London Authority as a baseline.
We found a 20% increase in the numbers of both passenger and freight vessels on the River Thames since 1999 with a consequential increase in demand for maintenance facilities. The research also considered how the needs may change in the future and what measures may be needed to ensure that the Thames can sustain a viable passenger and freight transport service.
The GLA published our report and used it as a background report to the London Plan July 2011. Paragraph 7.81 of the London Plan reports on the need for new boatyard facilities on the River Thames as follows:
“7.81 The Mayor commissioned research in 2007 to investigate the provision of boatyards in London. From this it is clear that there is a particular shortage of boatyard facilities that are capable of inspecting, maintaining and repairing the larger passenger craft on the Thames. One of the actions in the Implementation Plan (see Chapter 8) will be to promote such a new facility.”
